Guide: measure, convert, then add waste

For materials, accuracy comes from consistent units and a sensible waste allowance. Convert units before calculating and round up when buying packaged items (tile boxes, wallpaper rolls).

How to estimate materials (the reliable method)

  1. Measure twice: confirm length/width/height and note units.
  2. Convert once: put everything into one unit system (e.g., metres + square metres).
  3. Calculate base quantity: area ÷ coverage, or length × width × depth, etc.
  4. Add waste: cuts, off-cuts, and breakage are normal. Round up to packaged quantities.
Tip: use the Unit Converter before estimating to avoid unit mistakes.

Common mistakes to avoid

Mixing units

The most common DIY error is mixing millimetres and metres (or inches and feet). Convert first, then calculate.

Ignoring waste

Tiles, boards, and wallpaper need cutting. A small waste allowance often prevents a second trip to the store.

Skipping coats / thickness

Paint depends on coats and coverage. Concrete depends on depth. Include the “hidden” dimension.

Not subtracting openings

For wallpaper and paint, doors/windows can materially change totals. Subtract them if you’re close to a roll/tin boundary.
